The Rastafari collective's initiative to give back to Shama, a coastal community in Ghana's Western Region, is taking shape with a planned beach clean-up on March 5th. This effort aligns well with the community's needs, as Shama faces challenges related to waste management and environmental issues. Shama District, one of 22 administrative districts in the Western Region, is experiencing rapid urbanization and development. The district's population is split between urban (56%) and rural (44%) areas, with major settlements including Shama, Aboadze, and Abuesi along the coast. The district faces several environmental challenges:
Lack of proper drainage facilities in most settlements, leading to flooding and erosion
Uncontrolled settlement growth and lack of land use plans
Inadequate waste management infrastructure
The collective's beach clean-up initiative addresses these issues directly. With the blessing of Shama's elders, the group is now seeking sponsorship to acquire necessary supplies for the event. Items still needed for the clean-up include:
Gloves
1000 pieces of trash bags (bin liners)
10-15 large garbage bins (to be donated to the Shama community)
Water (to keep volunteers hydrated during the clean-up)
This initiative not only helps improve the local environment but also aligns with broader district goals of enhancing public services and addressing waste management challenges. By donating garbage bins to the community, the collective is contributing to long-term waste management solutions. The timing of this initiative is particularly relevant, as Shama District is undergoing rapid transformation due to the growing oil and gas industry in the region. Efforts like this beach clean-up can help maintain sustainable livelihoods and protect the coastal environment, which is crucial for the district's future development.
